Pilgrimage History

The traditional Bhutanese Buddhist are very keen pilgrims. With the notion of travelling for fun and holiday unknown to them, pilgrimage was the only travel they made outside their work. The few Bhutanese who could afford expensive and long pilgrimage prided in their spiritual journeys and later enthusiastically recounted their travels with their stories of struggles and fulfilment. Pilgrimage accounts were exciting and interesting tales of foreign lands and different cultures. Thus, the pilgrimage accounts, both written and oral, give us not only a insight into the world and societies they describe but also the perception and experience of the pilgrim.
